With hyperlinks, you can connect two pages. You can click on them and navigate back and forth. You might even provide a description, an alias.

But they don’t have any meaning in and of themselves. They may exist in context but they don’t share it. Their quality is hidden. They are dumb.

Perhaps the writer and readers can identify what relationship exists between the two linked pieces. But, inevitably, their meaning has to be interpreted from context to be truly understood.
