The Feynman Technique is a method of learning which is based on gaining and passing on knowledge through teaching. In an iterative process, gaps in knowledge are identified and filled.
The steps are as follows:
- Write down what you know to realise what you don’t know.
- Find an explanation for the concept you are studying. Try to explain it in detail and simplify it so a 5-year-old could understand it.
- Share your explanation with others, present your findings and invite questions and feedback.
- Go back to the drawing board and reiterate. Find material for the questions you couldn’t answer and follow-up with your “audience”.
- Be sure to prioritise areas of study. Not every detail is necessary to see the bigger picture. Sometimes you might even get lost in the intricacies which cloud your view of the overall problem.
- Acknowledge that there will always be gaps in your understanding. Cherish them as areas for improvement, in the spirit of life Long Learning.
